Liverpool and Slavery: A Story Map

Liverpool’s history is deeply linked to the history of transatlantic slavery, a connection that has left a lasting impact on the city’s landscape, economy, and collective memory. This Liverpool and Slavery Story Map provides an interactive exploration of the sites and spaces that bear witness to this difficult yet significant past.

Developed in collaboration between the Liverpool Black History Research Group (LBHRG) and the University of Liverpool’s Geography Department, this project seeks to uncover and contextualise Liverpool’s role in the transatlantic slave economy. By mapping key locations associated with slavery and its legacies, the Story Map offers an accessible and educational resource for understanding how slavery shaped the city’s development and continues to inform its identity today. We invite you to explore the Story Map and engage with the rich and complex history it presents, as we strive to ensure that the legacies of slavery are acknowledged and remembered for future generations.
