This research adopts a high burden of proof and its findings, as listed below, are a ‘least case scenario’. For example, there are some proprietors with professions, such as attorney and accountant, included in the not proven category who acted on behalf of merchants involved in the slave economy. Additionally, proprietors with commonly found names have been excluded, even when direct evidence, of an individual bearing that name, has been found to be involved in the slave economy.
The forthcoming database will be open and can be updated as and when more information becomes available.
We welcome contributions from other researchers and family historians.
